Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Plan debarking operations
   • Assess variations in timber characteristics and record outcomes of assessment.
   • Produce debarking schedules according to organisational procedures
   • Communicate schedules, log management procedures and order information to sawyers.
   • Plan and prescribe diameters and lengths.
2. Monitor debarking process
   • Review specified standard diameters and lengths.
   • Monitor debarking processes for accuracy of diameter and condition of debarked logs
   • Provide assistance to operators with the evaluation of logs and debarking problems
   • Monitor log management and output and record possible process improvements
   • Investigate, record and report on debarking operations, major problems and equipment faults.
3. Direct debarking operations
   • Make modifications to diameters or schedules to ensure optimum performance, and communicate these to operators
   • Document log debarking improvement modifications.
   • Obtain and record debarked log output details.
   • Direct debarked logs to storage or transferred for further processing.
   • Complete operating logs and processing records.

Performance Evidence

A person demonstrating competency in this unit must satisfy all of the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit. If a specific volume or frequency is not stated below, then evidence must be provided that the following requirements have been performed on at least one occasion:

follow organisational policies and procedures for log debarking

produce and implement debarking schedules

assess individual logs for diameter range, curvature, faults, species and moisture content

coordinate personnel to conduct log debarking to meet established quality specifications and timelines

identify faults in logs.
